A Dairy Queen location in Wisconsin has made headlines for posting a ‘politically incorrect’ sign on their front door. The sign, which had been displayed on door for many years, is sure to attract the attention of everyone who approaches the door to enter the restaurant.
It states:
“This restaurant is politically incorrect. We have been known to say Merry Christmas, Happy Easter and God Bless America. We salute and honor the flag, give thanks to our troops, police officers an firefighters. Give thanks for the USA and give free sundaes to veterans on Veterans Day. If this offends you, you are welcome to contact the owner”.
Despite being posted for years now, only recently did the sign gain traction online after an out-of-town visitor from Oregon took a picture of it and post it on Facebook.
The visitor expressed feeling offended by what she felt was an exclusive set of ideals being represented by the sign.
Since then people have had a lot to say about this sign both in support and against it.
Kevin Scheunemann, the franchise owner had this to say: ““I felt the sign was appropriate to hang in terms of being transparent about the views of the owner and staff supporting God and country…It just seems that those kinds of values and principles are becoming controversial in society.”
Local business owners agree with him saying that customers can choose not walk into if they don’t agree with his expression of his beliefs; April Serwe says “He posted it on the door so you see it before you walk in. You don’t have to walk in if you don’t agree with it.”
Even local politicians like Wisconsin State Representative Jesse Kremer visited DQ location with his family showing their support by posting a photo online stating, “Happy to see that the owner has not backed down from his 1st Amendment right to Free Expression!”
While many people would like nothing more than for this controversy to be over as soon as possible, Dairy Queen corporation made sure everyone knows where they stand: “This sign expresses views of this independent owner only…We expect our franchisees and employees treat every person who walks through our doors with utmost dignity respect. Nothing less acceptable.”
They also went onto mention that their other independent franchises do not share these same views as expressed by Kevin Scheunemann’s sign but will still strive make sure all customers are treated respectfully regardless how each franchisee chooses to conduct their business.
