A shocking new article has just revealed one of this city’s darkest secrets. Previously known for its beauty and vibrant culture before liberal policies began to tear it down, San Francisco has a hidden side to it that many don’t know about.
Apparently, the city is built atop numerous forgotten cemeteries. It may come as a surprise to most locals, considering the ban on burials in the early 20th century, but it appears that these forgotten graves have been hiding beneath the streets since then.
It turns out that when the city was first settled, mass graves were not uncommon and many of them were quickly forgotten. Hundreds of bodies were dumped into single graves and never given proper send-offs or commemorations.
This means that there are likely thousands of corpses still lingering under the city streets today. Even some iconic landmarks like Saints Peter and Paul Church near Washington Square or San Francisco Public Library at Civic Center sit above former cemetery sites. Beth Winegarner, an expert in uncovering San Francisco’s old cemeteries described a repeating system of terrible leadership in the area throughout history: “Very quickly I discovered that we have these repeating stories…There was a cemetery, then they forgot about it. They may have moved the bodies somewhere else. And then 20 years later someone would be developing and go ‘Why are there dead people here?’”
This negligence has resulted in countless forgotten souls who were simply never transferred to their new resting places when development started sprawl around them.
Despite its continued terrible leadership over time, San Francisco has become one final stop for all those who seek refuge in its arms – including those who are no longer with us here on earth – America’s forgotten children.
It makes you wonder what happens to those who disappear into this big city nowadays.
