There has been a lot of debate about who the new Speaker will be after the McCarthy removal.
There is a small contingent of Republicans that have been pushing to have Donald Trump voted in as the Speaker.
Trump finally commented on the subject.
If I Have To…
Trump was being coy about this, at least initially.
He had stated, “A lot of people have been calling me about speaker.
“All I can say is we’ll do whatever’s best for the country and for the Republican Party…We have some great, great people.”
Trump later came out to really create buzz.
After a day of letting that settle, Trump stated that he would become Speaker for a limited time, 90 days, just to unite the party.
That is rather ironic because the biggest divide in the party right now is between MAGA Republicans and the establishment.
That is not a shot at Trump, MAGA, or the establishment, it is just fact.
The way to unite this party is to put someone in there who is both liked and respected by both sides, who will actually have a backbone to stand up to Democrats and Joe Biden.
This gets even more interesting with both Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan announce they were running for Speaker.
Both are allies of Kevin McCarthy, but both of them have also supported Trump in the past.
Then, Thursday night, Trump reversed course again, endorsing Jim Jordan as Speaker over Scalise, so we have to see how the Caucus responds to that.
I suspect people will vote for Scalise out of spite against Trump.
The interesting aspect of this is that if Scalise wins this vote, what will the MAGA Republicans do when the vote gets floored?
I would suspect that if he loses, Jim Jordan will gracefully endorse Scalise and I would suspect Scalise will do the same.
Having said that, Trump loyalists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, just to name a few, may still cast a vote for Jordan to try to make a point.
With the razor-thin margin that the GOP has in the House right now, it will only take about six Republicans to block the vote.
Let’s just hope they all find a way to come together and get this over with as quickly as possible so they can get back to business.
