As citizens of the United States, we have become accustomed to hearing about our nation’s corrupt justice system.
Unfortunately, it appears that even a rebel leader in Colombia is not above the law – his son has been arrested and indicted for money laundering.
This is something that would never happen in the United States due to its deeply entrenched corruption within the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The recent arrest of Nicolas Petro – son of Colombia’s current president, Gustavo Petro – has brought about mixed reactions.
The Colombian attorney general’s office announced his arrest in an official statement as part of their investigation into money laundering and illicit enrichment.
While some have welcomed the decision to investigate further, others are concerned over potential influence from his father and the consequences that could arise from it.
In early March, accusations began swirling around that Nicolas had taken money from drug traffickers in exchange for including them in his father’s efforts to broker peace talks with criminal organizations in the Caribbean region.
When questioned about these claims, he denied them adamantly claiming that they were nothing more than political and personal attacks meant to destroy him professionally.
President Gustavo Petro responded to news of his son’s arrest saying that he was “hurt” but reaffirmed his commitment not intervene or pressure the attorney general in this case.
He also expressed his support for the investigation declaring that it would be carried out according to law.
Daysuris del Carmen Vásquez Castro (his former wife) was also arrested on similar charges according to a statement issued by the attorney general’s office on Saturday.
This story serves as yet another reminder of how corruption remains deeply entrenched within America’s justice system.
Despite numerous allegations against key figures such as Hunter Biden, no action has been taken by US prosecutors to indict him for any wrongdoings or alleged crimes committed.
