After the GOP won the House in 2022, the House announced that it was going to investigate everything under the sun related to Joe and Hunter Biden.
Oddly enough, the one thing the GOP did not say it would investigate was the outcome of the 2020 election, which Trump still maintains was stolen.
Now, after keeping the House in 2024 by the skin of their teeth, Speaker Johnson (R-LA) confirmed that House committees will now be investigating the January 6 Select Committee, which would include Liz Cheney.
Much Ado About Nothing
That may not have been the best sub-header to use there, but when push comes to shove, that is what all this will amount to.
I would love for Liz Cheney to be held accountable, but the truth of the matter is that by House rules, she did not break any laws.
I know what you are saying… but she selectively chose evidence and tampered with a witness.
And you would be correct, but according to House rules, none of that is illegal.
The big issue here is how Cheney influenced Cassidy Hutchinson, the star witness of the committee.
After Cheney was awarded the second highest civilian medal in this country, the Presidential Civilian’s Medal, Johnson stated, “The Jan 6 Select Committee manipulated AND destroyed evidence – created a fake, phony narrative all to try and hurt Trump.
“They even hired a TV producer from the legacy media in a desperate attempt to legitimize what Americans knew was a total hoax and complete waste of time.”
Johnson concluded, “Be assured of this: House Republicans WILL continue our investigation into this corrupt committee and it will be FULLY FUNDED so it can continue next Congress.”
It will be tough for them to prove that Cheney destroyed anything, so I want to focus on Hutchinson.
Now, if this were a court of law and Cheney was a prosecuting attorney, she would be in jail for witness tampering, but a House hearing is not a court of law.
That production she put on was just that, a production, and it largely centered on Hutchinson’s testimony, which, if you recall, flipped after Cheney helped her get another attorney and she started to coach her up.
The problem is that House rules do not prevent a committee member from talking to witnesses as long as they are not serving as the attorney for that witness, nor do they represent any other witnesses.
So, the committee will waste millions of dollars to tell us what we already know, and what it cannot offer a realistic criminal referral for. It’s a headline grabber, nothing else.
This is exactly why many of us would love to see committee hearings adopt the same rules as a courtroom, otherwise, they are nothing but a big, expensive show for which we foot the bill.
