The immigration crisis in Massachusetts escalated on Tuesday when Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency.

This response came after the unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants into the sanctuary state, which has caused an overwhelming strain on resources.

The number of families residing in state-funded shelters and other accommodations is up by 80% from last year, with over 20,000 individuals currently living there.

In her press conference addressing the crisis, Governor Healey expressed sympathy for those who are forced to flee their homes due to danger and seek refuge in Massachusetts.

She said that this is a national issue that must be addressed with a national response and called upon the federal government to use its existing tools to give these migrants an opportunity for work permits so they can support their families.

Additionally, Governor Healey asked everyone in Massachusetts to come together during this time and lend a helping hand.

Despite her calls for compassion toward those affected by the immigration crisis, it’s clear that the sheer number of arrivals has put a major strain on state resources.

According to FOX News, 100 families per day sought emergency shelter during July while costs have hit $45 million per month as people leaving such facilities decreased by two-thirds since 2019.

With outdated immigration laws, delays in obtaining federal work authorization and housing shortages further compounding the situation, it’s clear why Governor Healey felt compelled to declare a state of emergency despite her sympathies toward those affected by this humanitarian tragedy.
