Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has just struck a crushing blow to Disney.
DeSantis signed new legislation that had permitted Disney to be self-governing.
The original deal was signed to lure Disney to invest in the state and develop its theme park, but many believe there should have been a ticking clock in it in the first place.
Well, Governor DeSantis just took a sledgehammer to it.
Leveling the Playing Field
To be honest, Disney more or less took over the area where the park is located in secrecy.
The organization silently acquired land until it had virtual control over that entire area.
Most of the landowners at the time were more than happy to sell of what was mostly swampland at the time for a tidy profit.
Point being, Walt Disney had Florida over a barrel when the time came to make a deal, but those days are long gone.
Today, Florida operates several major parks, none of which have the deal that was put in place to favor Disney.
DeSantis stated, “How do you give one theme park its own government and then treat all of the other theme parks differently?
“So, we believe that that was not good policy.
“We believe that being joined at the hip with this one California-based company was not something that was justifiable or sustainable.”
DeSantis further stated, “My signature will also end Disney’s exemption from Florida building code and Florida fire prevention code.
“It will end Disney’s exemption from state regulatory reviews and approval.”
Since the other parks in the state can survive without the massive breaks Disney was getting, it is high time this playing field gets leveled.
