Here’s some shocking news that didn’t make many headlines this week…
Early Tuesday night, tragedy struck on Interstate 80 in the Sugar House area of Salt Lake City.
A semi truck driver has lost their life after an accident involving multiple vehicles and a fire that shut down the freeway in both directions for hours.
The Utah Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened just after 9 PM on westbound I-80 at 1300 East in Salt Lake City.
At the time, all but one lane was closed for construction crews to paint under the bridge.
The semi truck drove into this closure at freeway speeds, knocking over several barrels and nearly missing one of the Highway Patrol cars.
The semi then clipped a pickup truck before hitting the back of another semi, causing it to jackknife.
It continued forward and collided with a construction trailer full of epoxy paint.
This resulted in a major fire which prompted officials to close down I-80 completely until it could be safely extinguished.
Afterward, emergency crews located the driver inside of the cab who had unfortunately passed away by then – their identity is not yet known.
All lanes have since reopened while an investigation into what caused this tragic accident continues.
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this unfortunate event.
