There is not a lot that interrupts the routine of the guard on duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
To even be selected for this post is a high honor
So, you better believe the soldiers on duty take this very seriously.
Show Some Respect
While visitors are encouraged, they are also expected to be respectful.
“Walking the Mat” consists of 21 steps, a 21-second pause, then 21 steps in the other direction.
The guard performs what is symbolic of a 21-gun salute for the entirety of his shift, regardless of weather.
The unit charged with this duty is part of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, called the “Old Guard.”
One of the unique factors of this unit is that they do not wear rank insignia since they do not know the rank of the Unknown Soldier.
With this level of respect and dedication, those that choose to disrespect the memorial are immediately called out, as happens here…
You would think common sense would tell people to remain quiet and respectful, but that is not the world we live in today.
But thankfully, the Old Guard is there to ensure the Unknown Soldier is respected at all times.
