Janet Yellen Gets Mind Blowing Experience From Chinese Food

Yellen

China turned out to be one heck of a trip for Janet Yellen. She wanted to try some of the local cuisine and had a mind blowing experience. Nobody told her that jian shou qing mushrooms have a tiny little bit of Psilocybin in them. They’re known to be tasty and perfectly safe when properly cooked.

Yellen chows down on shrooms

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen can’t be blamed if she was acting a little strange for a day or so. She liked them so much the 76-year-old chowed down on four portions of jian shou qing. That’s a type of wild mushroom that everyone in Yunnan province goes crazy for as a cooking ingredient, when it becomes available in July. They’re described as exceptionally tasty.

Since the locals are used to them, they hardly notice the “little mushroom men” they see when they eat some not quite cooked enough. They have been confirmed to contain the hallucinogen Psilocybin but it cooks out. Usually.

When Yellen arrived in Beijing on July 6, she was hungry from her trip and wanted to try the local food scene. She ended up dropping in to a casual restaurant. Chinese state media likes her a lot better than Antony Blinken so they “took care to praise the secretary’s chopstick skills.

She can’t be blamed for her ignorance of local customs, half the mushrooms sold in the market are mildly toxic in one way or another. The emergency room at the local hospital gets so many cases of poisoning that they don’t consider anyone an official resident until they’re examined for it at least once. The freaky fungus which the Treasury honcho tried were selling like hotcakes.

According to Dr. Peter Mortimer, a professor at Kunming Institute of Botany, “I have a friend who mistakenly ate them and hallucinated for three days.” That’s not typical. A typical reaction was written up by a food critic. “You thought you were walking straight but you just fell sideways.

Others describe “little blue mushroom men” that seem to follow them around. Nobody is reporting Yellen having any adverse effects afterwards, but she’ll probably be a lot more mellow and relaxed for a while.

In and Out mushrooms

Yellen was joined by a group of female economists intending on having an informal chat over dinner about “America’s fraught economic relationship with China.” They decided on a place that was part of a popular chain of eateries, “an outlet of the Yi Zuo Yi Wang restaurant chain — the name means ‘In and Out’ in English.

That sounded familiar and put Janet off her guard. The restaurant’s phone has been ringing off the hook since the incident made news, with half of China trying to make a reservation.

Restaurant staff chuckle that “It was an extremely magical day” when Secretary Yellen popped in.

Nobody is suggesting that she has anything to do with that bag of Colombian flake found in the West Wing or anything but considering her age, she probable dosed a time or two back in the day and should have been able to handle any effects.

Most likely, even though she gobbled up four doses, the cook killed all the magic with heat. Food Critic Matt Miller tried cooking some up and made sure to get them well done. He freaked out over the flavor. Yellen probably got something close to what he experienced.

So, I know you want to find out if I experienced any of the hallucinogenic effects of the psilocybin. Did I see the xiao ren ren marching and dancing about my kitchen? Did I experience visions of brightly-colored mushrooms performing a choreographed show for me, as in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice? Did I climb to the roof of my building and try to fly off into the night? Well, no. I had cooked them thoroughly enough to destroy the toxin. However, I have to say that, for the rest of the evening, I had a very distinct feeling of calmness, openness, happiness, and colors and sounds definitely seemed more detailed and emphatic than they had before.
