Unfortunately, its become second nature these days to have celebrities out of Hollywood offering their two cents on the topic of politics. And while everyone has a right to an opinion, veteran actor Kurt Russell believes that actors should stay away from airing their political opinions.
Russell, who identifies as a “hardcore libertarian” and has been in the business since 1962, recently shared his thoughts on why entertainers should step away from making political statements.
During an interview with The New York Times, Russell stated that he considers himself and other entertainers as court jesters. This view dates back to William Shakespeare’s King Lear when ‘the Fool’ was introduced: a character used to make the king laugh yet still point out his faults.
A court jester isn’t always funny, but they can be seen saying things no one else can without repercussions. While it’s important for everyone to have a voice and learn about different topics, Russell believes comedians are not meant to use their platforms to push their personal politics.
He commented that when they do so they lose their status as court jesters which is essential for our culture today; allowing people of all backgrounds and beliefs to have a good laugh at life’s difficulties – even if it means poking fun at politicians or popular figures in society at times.
Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar are two well-known actresses who have been vocal about their support of Democratic candidates such as Barack Obama and Joe Biden while also speaking out against Republicans like Sarah Palin and Kimberly Klacick in recent years.
During an interview on The View where Kurt was asked by Whoopi about gun control, he expressed how much he dislikes seeing actors become politically involved – especially comedians whose main role is to make people laugh without bringing too much attention onto themselves or pushing any agendas along the way.
Furthermore, Whoopi herself refused to say Donald Trump’s name during his presidency instead referring him as “you know who”.
It’s important for everyone to hold onto freedom of speech but also remember that entertainment is supposed to be just that – entertaining.
