Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) was hoping to leave office with a piece of legacy legislation.
She had hoped to pass electoral legislation to close up what she deemed to be loopholes in a law that is almost 150 years old.
Instead, it will more than likely be a more focused bill that comes out of the Senate that will be passed.
Mitch Strikes Again
Whether you like or hate Senator McConnell (R-KY), you have to admit that he is very good at one thing… blocking.
McConnell thought Cheney’s legislation was too broad, so he will support legislation being crafted by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) instead.
He stated, “I strongly support the modest changes that our colleagues in a working group have fleshed out after literally months of detailed discussions.”
He added, “It’s clear that only a bipartisan compromise originating in the Senate can actually become law.
“One party going it alone would be a non-starter. In my view the House bill is a non-starter.”
Senator Collins added, “Senator McConnell’s support sends an important message.
“The Senate bill is a carefully crafted bipartisan reform that makes sensible and much-needed updates to the archaic and ambiguous Electoral Count Act of 1887.”
If the bill gets through the Senate, it is a fairly safe assumption that it will get through the House, which will be a crushing blow to Cheney.
