Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) has been taking a victory lap ever since the debt ceiling deal was reached with Biden.
While he is ecstatic over the deal, there are some members of the caucus that are going to try to derail it.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), in particular, is very unhappy, calling it a “turd sandwich.”
What Did We Get?
Joe Biden just got $4 trillion to work with and a guarantee that the debt ceiling will not be broached until the first quarter of 2025.
One of the key issues that the caucus wanted removed from the bill was the funding for 87,000 new IRS agents.
That number was reduced to about 85,000, hardly the promise that was made by McCarthy.
Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) stated, “So there will be 85,260 more IRS agents rather than 87,000 to eat you alive. Big win.”

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called it a “catastrophe” for the defense spending budget.
None of that pushback really matters, however, because the bill will have enough support on both sides of the aisle that it should overwhelmingly pass through Congress and wind up on Biden’s desk.
The real problems for McCarthy start after that.
Up until now, McCarthy has had a united caucus, but that will not be the case once this bill passes, especially for how dismissive and arrogant McCarthy has been about the detractors of the legislation.
