Just as an elderly woman was checking out at her local grocery store, a thug suddenly snatched her purse and ran off. Luckily, before he could escape, an unexpected hero came out of nowhere and delivered immediate justice.
A heartwarming story emerged from a Kroger in Lemon Township recently that has captivated the nation. Pat Goins, an 87-year-old woman who had gone to the store for her weekly shopping trip, struck up a conversation with a young father and his one-year-old daughter while there.
Little did she know that this kind stranger would soon heroically come to her rescue.
The incredible moment occurred when screams for help filled the store after Pat’s purse was grabbed by Derek Vauhn, a 58 year old man who attempted to flee with it. As security cameras captured the scene, Deshawn Pressley -the same young man Pat had just conversed with moments before – sprang into action and chased down the thief in pursuit.
Pressley easily caught up to him and threw him to the ground before delivering multiple blows until police arrived on scene. The suspect seemed relieved when officers took him off of Pressley’s hands as he was arrested and charged with felony robbery and theft.
For his uncommon act of valor, Pressley was recognized by Butler County Sheriff’s Office with a Citizen’s Award and showered with praise from his community.
When recounting the incident, Pressley stated, “I just turned around and did what I had to do as a citizen and I’m glad I helped her because she’s a wonderful, lovely lady and I just love helping people, especially older women,” he said.
Pat is eternally grateful for what Deshawn did for her that day, calling him nothing short of her hero; they have since bonded over dinner and plan on staying in touch moving forward.
Despite not viewing himself as anything special, Deshawn stands out as an example of courage and kindness amongst us all – we can only hope more brave men like him will rise up whenever evil presents itself.
