The South Side of Chicago is not very happy with their hero Barack Obama.
This is the site of the Obama Center.
As it turns out, it may be the worst thing that ever happened to the South Side residents.
Chasing Us Out
Obama picked this area for his center to help revitalize the community.
However, Obama did not ensure that any controls were put in place to protect the current residents.
Well, the area is starting to see a revival even though the center is two years away from opening.
The problem… that revival is resulting in higher costs of living and excessive rents by landlords.
Some tenants are complaining of rent hikes of 40 percent in the last year.
One area activist stated, “This is the community that sent him to the White House, and we should be the community that gets to stay and benefit from the presidential center.”
A resident stated, “The Obama Center is not being built for Chicago. It’s being built for the world. …[And the people of the world] don’t want us here. So what do you think is going to happen?”
Mayor-elect Johnson, during a recent area meeting is aware of the problem, having stated, “We have to make sure, for families that live in the very communities where economic development is taking place, that landlords don’t see it as an opportunity to push the families out who have been a part of these communities for decades.”
Now this is his headache, but there is really nothing he can do other than offer those empty promises.
Let’s see how the residents of the South Side feel about Democrats and Obama come 2024 when all this comes to a head.
