Biden’s Ratings Drop, Erosion of Support Within His Own Party and Voters

support

President Biden has only been in office for seven months but his approval ratings may have peaked already. Polls released in July reveal that the relatively high approval ratings among Democrats which Biden entered office with have begun to slacken somewhat. Biden has never had much support among Republicans and is unlikely to gain any more. His approval ratings are only likely to decline more as his term progresses.

Support for Biden falls

A Rasmussen poll found that of 1,500 likely voters 56 per cent disapproved of Biden’s performance as president, a finding which is consistent with other polling throughout his months in office.

Given the current partisan split in America it is difficult for any president to maintain the support of much more than half of the country.

For Biden the results are concerning because the drop in support is being driven by a sharp decline in enthusiasm from Democrats who voted for him in November.

For the White House one consolation is the fact that, according to numbers alone, Biden is still more popular than President Trump ever was during his term.

Numbers, however, do not tell the whole story when it comes to popularity. President Trump could rely on a solid base of very enthusiastic supporters who rarely wavered in their support.

In contrast Biden largely reached the White House as a compromise candidate for Democrats who were overwhelmingly focused on ensuring that Trump was voted out and replaced.

Democrats lose interest

Impassioned opposition to Trump served as the core of the 2020 campaign strategy for Democrats. This worked well enough during the race itself but alone it could never have served as the basis for a four year term in the White House.

Lack of Trump is most likely the single most important factor in the decline in support for the President. Without the imminent threat of another Trump term Democrats are being forced to look at Biden himself.

Unlike the former president this White House has a voter base which is broad enough but lacks much depth. Most Democrats have no attachment to Joe Biden personally and his failures are more likely to affect his support among the core of his base.

Not being Trump is still good enough for a large percentage of the country but as the term goes on without any significant accomplishments that percentage will inevitably erode.

Kamala Harris, evidently the intended successor, is even less popular than Joe Biden; Mike Pence had a higher approval rating at this point in Trump’s term.

It is difficult to imagine anything which Biden and Harris could do to earn any major boost in popularity as the term goes on and Democrats become more willing to criticize the administration.
