It was a tragedy that shook the nation on Sunday evening.
A 43-year-old male paddleboarder went missing in the waters of Martha’s Vineyard and despite heroic efforts, his body could not be recovered until Monday morning.
The search for the man yielded no results until he was located by side-scan sonar from a boat around 100 feet away from shore.
The Obama family’s $12 million mansion lies nearby the Edgartown Great Pond where he was found.
The incident took place at around 7:46 pm and it is unclear whether or not former President Obama was staying at the estate at that time.
However, numerous agencies responded to the pond including local police, State Police patrols, Air Wing, detectives, Dukes County Sheriff’s Department and Coast Guard.
Despite their best efforts, divers were unsuccessful in finding him throughout the night leading them to take a pause so they can assess next steps and re-equip for further searches on Monday morning.
The victim had been with another paddleboarder when he went under water who saw him struggling before he disappeared beneath the surface never to resurface again.
His body was eventually recovered just before 10 am after being located by Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers using side-scan sonar from a boat near Turkeyland Cove while waters ran eight feet deep in that area.
This heartbreaking news has left his family mourning for their loss as well as many members of this community who are devastated by it all.
