I hate reporting stories like this.

Young kids needlessly losing their lives when all of it was preventable.

In this case, it was a teenager driver, without a license, that a relative had rented, that cost five children their lives.

Why?

According to reports, the children were driving along the Hutchinson River Parkway in New York.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy that did not have a license, did not negotiate a turn properly and wound up hitting a tree.

The vehicle caught fire and all but one of the children in the car were trapped and died.

The accident happened just after midnight, and the children in the car were between eight and 17 years old, so what the hell were they doing out that time of night?

The children were identified as Malik Smith, Anthony Billips Jr., Zahnyiah Cross, Shawnell Cross, and Andrew Billips.

Smith’s father, also named Malik, stated, “I told him, his mother told him, his older brothers told him, stop driving without a license, without a permit. Anything happens, you get pulled over, you get in trouble for these things. Stop doing this.”

Police believe the driver either fell asleep or was distracted, with the latter being the more likely considering they had a car full of children.

Five lives, all gone, and it never should have happened.
