Former Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist has passed away at age 87 following a surgical procedure and brief illness.
His family was by his side during this difficult time.
It is clear that Governor Sundquist left an indelible mark on the state of Tennessee and will be remembered for many years to come.
Don Sunquist first made a name for himself in the printing and advertising sectors in Shelbyville and Memphis before beginning his political journey as a representative for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District.
During his six terms in Congress, he was particularly celebrated for his fiscal conservatism during his tenure on the Ways and Means Committee.
In 1994, Tennesseans elected him governor–an honor they reconfirmed four years later with an overwhelming re-election victory.
Sundquist’s legacy as governor is one to be admired for generations to come.
Not only did he pioneer welfare reform in the state, but he also introduced important legislation related to protecting crime victims’ rights and spurred economic development higher than ever before seen in Tennessee’s history.
Under his administration, two major national sports teams joined the state: The Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators were welcomed into their respective cities during this time period as well.
Current Governor Bill Lee expressed admiration for Sundquist’s service to the state stating “Governor Sundquist was an impactful leader and principled statesman who devoted his life to public service.”
His wife Martha stated her family gratitude for all those who sent their love and prayers saying “We are comforted by our faith and friends, and know he is with our Lord and loved ones in heaven”.
It can be said without a doubt that Don Sundquist left behind an impressive legacy of dedication to public service throughout all levels of government from local issues all the way up to Congress–and ultimately leading up to being elected as governor of Tennessee twice over.
