Scandal may be a harsh word here, but I believe it to be accurate.
When Democrats tried to pass legislation that included a taxpayer match for campaign funds, Republicans went ballistic.
As it turns out, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently benefited from a similar program in Florida.
DeSantis got a nice bonus in his campaign account of $3.5 million, all taxpayer funds, due to an existing law in Florida.
Now liberals are calling him a hypocrite and conservatives want him to give the money back.
You Don’t Need It
Truth be told, DeSantis is crushing it in terms of fundraising, and that money is a drop in the bucket for him.
He needs to follow the example of other Republicans before him that returned the money.
The most recent being Rick Scott.
Regardless of it being a law on the books, there is simply no way any taxpayer should be forced to have their tax dollars benefit a political campaign, any political campaign, without them writing that check directly.
If I were a DeSantis adviser, I would be begging him to return the money immediately.
If he does not, he looks like a hypocrite and I can guarantee you that it will cost him votes if he decides to run for higher office.
Do the right thing, Ron; return the money and apologize for taking it in the first place.
This is a government handout and you are better than that.
