It was just another day and another psychopath arsonist for Detroit police. After an argument with the clerk, Julian Waddell Miller came back with a blowtorch and tried to burn the trapped worker alive inside his “safety” kiosk. That bullet proof glass and all the security locks may protect the cash but won’t do any good in a fire.
Arsonist free on bond
Police actually managed to track down the violent arsonist and arrest him. He’s been charged with “intent to murder, first-degree arson and a litany of other property damage and assault felonies.”
Somehow, he managed to post $100,000 bond on Friday and they let him go with a fashionable ankle bracelet. Nobody is saying much about why he did it other than there was some sort of “an argument with the clerk.” You can tell it’s a rough neighborhood when there’s a flier for “obituaries” on the wall beside the door.
Footage from the Sunoco gas and convenience store on West Seven Mile Road shows the moment Julian Waddell Miller “steps into the store with a trash can and blowtorch in hand.” The attack happened around 2:50 a.m. on June 20. The 35-year-old’s white T-shirt and colorful shorts helped police to identify him later.

He carefully dumped trash from a bin onto the floor. Some reports say he dumped a trash can full of gasoline but that appears inaccurate. There isn’t any audio on the clip but the arsonist appears to “exchange words” with the 27-year-old clerk “who is behind the counter and out of frame.”
It’s not clear where he got the blowtorch but he used it to set the trash on fire before vanishing into the predawn darkness. As soon as the arsonist set the blaze, it spread instantly, engulfing “nearly the entire store in less than two seconds.”
The clerk was left “trapped behind the counter.” After being rescued, the unnamed employee was rushed to a local hospital and treated for superficial burns.

Project Green Light
It seems that the arsonist was captured on camera by not just any old security system. “the harrowing footage was captured by Project Green Light cameras, a public-private partnership project aimed at trying to reduce crime in Detroit through a series of cameras installed at crime-prone areas.”
That’s probably what led to the clerk’s speedy rescue. Police confirm that they really did arrest Miller and it only took until Tuesday to get him in cuffs.
Officers took Miller into custody without incident and booked him in on “intent to murder, first-degree arson and a litany of other property damage and assault felonies.” By Friday, as soon as the arsonist got to see the judge, he was granted $100,000 bond.
CHARGED ⚖️
Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged Julian Waddell Miller, 35, in connection with the arson of a Sunoco gas station that injured a 27-year-old man who was working as a clerk. pic.twitter.com/WeyZ47Bkbt— Detroit Police News (@detroitpolice) June 23, 2023
It was quickly paid, possibly by one of those liberal bail activists, and he was turned loose with the obligatory tracking bracelet.
Nobody is saying a word about what prompted Miller to light the blaze but apparently the arsonist isn’t the only one to start a fire in a Detroit gas station.
Police are getting nervous that it’s starting to become a trend. The other recent incident appears totally unrelated and involved a man setting his own car on fire.
