Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) seems to finally realize that he needs to speak up if we are going to get a new Speaker in the House confirmed.
After saying nothing positive during the Scalise nomination, McCarthy is now fully supporting Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
This could make all the difference in the world for Jordan.
Is Trump Calling the Shots
During the initial race, Donald Trump had backed Jordan, but Rep. Scalise (R-LA) pulled a surprising upset to win the nomination 113-99.
This surprised a lot of people, including myself, who figured Jordan would get an easy win.
Scalise and McCarthy are allies, but McCarthy said nothing to support him, and his supporters in the House refused to budge on Scalise.
Scalise withdrew, and then Jordan won the second vote, becoming the nominee for the GOP.
McCarthy then came out and endorsed Jordan, which had everyone wondering why.
My guess is that with Jordan getting Trump’s endorsement, once Scalise dropped out, Trump probably reached out to McCarthy to help Jordan get the gavel.
McCarthy stated, “I think Jim Jordan can get there.
“I’m one who understands how difficult it is.
“I did walk in with more support during this time, but I believe at the end of the day, Jim can get there.
“I’m doing everything I can to help him be able to become speaker.”
This is a tough pill for McCarthy to swallow, as the gavel is all he ever wanted, but there is no way McCarthy would cross Trump.
If McCarthy is able to get his supporters to back Jordan, there would only be a handful of people left that Jordan would need to support him in order to get the gavel.
Hopefully, everyone gets on board and we have a new Speaker soon so Congress can get back to work.
