A whole mob of D.C. Council members are demanding that District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser cough up more cash to deal with the explosive immigrant overflow. They’re supposed to be a sanctuary city and disgruntled illegals are making them look bad. Get with the program, ten irate progressive lawmakers chide local officials.
Act like a sanctuary city
We’re supposed to be a sanctuary city, so we need to act like one, nearly a dozen liberals demanded by letter on July 14.
They insist that Mayor Bowser “release the city’s contingency funds, provide city staff members to assist migrants‘ arrival, create respite centers near Union Station, ensure buses arrive during daylight hours, and provide coronavirus tests, protective equipment and isolation hotels for those who have been infected with the coronavirus.” She better have it set up quick, too, they snap.
Migrants have been arriving from Arizona and Texas by the busload. All the sanctuary organizations who usually process our new illegal citizens are swamped, overwhelmed and out of money. Progressives already blew through their one and only federal grant check. It’s been a full three months since Texas Governor Greg Abbott started his convoy of buses rolling and Arizona’s Doug Ducey joined in two months ago.
Now that the district is getting a taste of what the border states have been dealing with they’re overwhelmed. Even so, they can’t complain about it because it was Democrats’ idea in the first place. Now they’re stuck.
As soon as the illegals are captured on the American side of the border, they’re offered a free ride to D.C., which many of the migrants are happy to accept as they were headed that direction anyway.
As the number of invading illegals pouring across the border increases steadily, so do the buses. Up to five a day are pulling in at all hours. Overwhelmed sanctuary aid workers started calling in sick and blaming it on COVID they caught from the migrants.
Mobilize your administration
“With the number of buses arriving every day increasing rapidly,” the D.C. council writes, “we encourage you to mobilize your administration to coordinate with other jurisdictions in the region to step in and assist with the response. If the District truly is a sanctuary city, we must stand up against the hateful rhetoric of Gov. Abbott and provide a dignified welcome to the arriving migrants.”
Bowser wrote back, “don’t look at me.” She wants them to go pester Joe Biden.
“We are dealing with a federal issue that the District of Columbia won’t be able to bear,” Bowser explained to reporters on Monday, July 18. “We have to be very focused on working with D.C. residents who are homeless and have a right to shelter in our city, especially as we prepare for the winter months. We know that we have a federal issue that demands a federal response.”
Homeless people need sanctuary, too. The only thing she can come up with to stop the flood of illegals is “work across state lines to prevent people from being tricked into getting on buses.” Leave them stuck in the desert and the problem will solve itself.
Bowser says she’s doing her best to give the best sanctuary welcome she can to each of our well traveled guests. She called the Imperial Palace for more FEMA money in the form of an emergency grant to SAMU First Response. That’s the general go to agency for aid to illegals. FEMA isn’t answering their phone.
SAMU admits they don’t “have the capacity to coordinate all the buses arriving in the city every week.” They can handle a third of them. The rest are someone else’s problem. SAMU is currently understaffed and providing aid to twice the migrants they contracted for, which means they get paid half as much per head.
