House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) drunken husband had his DUI trial this week.
Rather than go to trial, he changed his plea to guilty and threw himself at the court’s mercy.
For his troubles, he got minimum penalties across the board.
It’s a Rich Man’s Game
Due to the serious injuries of the other party in the accident, Paul Pelosi should have been charged with a felony; he was not.
He was charged with a misdemeanor, which is a significant difference.
A misdemeanor with injury has a mandatory jail sentence of five days to one year, while a felony starts at 16 months and as much as 16 years in jail.
For a misdemeanor, it is generally considered to be a very minor injury, which was not the case here.
Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail, about $5,000 fines (typical), three months of DUI school (minimal), and three years probation.
He also has to pay restitution for medical bills and lost wages, which is typical.
So, to this point, he was either given minimal or average, even though the second driver of the car is being treated now for multiple injuries, including a head injury, as well as having both cars totaled.
Oh, that five days in jail, it is not happening.
Before we get to that, realize that Pelosi was blowing a .082 at the time of the test, which was roughly 2.25 hours AFTER the accident.
Regardless of weight or size, people burn .016 per hour off their BAL, which means Pelosi was more than likely well above 0.11 at the time of the accident.
Translation: he was ripped out of his mind.
Pelosi spent maybe 10-12 hours at the local holding facility, but since he was there during the overnight hours, the judge gave him credit for two days in jail.
He was also apparently a well-behaved man during that time, so he was credited with two days off for good behavior.
That leaves one day left… which is being moved over to community service.
The man is worth more than $120 million, so he lost his weekend dinner money in fines and restitution.
My guess is Democrats will say, “See, nobody is above the law,” when in reality this was a slap in the face to the American people and the driver that had his life changed thanks to Paul Pelosi.
At a minimum, Pelosi should have been in jail for 16 months… instead, he and Nancy will be sitting on a private beach and eating gourmet ice cream this weekend.
Oh, by the way, did we mention The Hill headlined its coverage of the story, “Paul Pelosi sentenced to 5 days in jail for DUI.”
That was for the sake of all the headline readers who can now say the courts judged him fairly.
They will have little idea that Pelosi walked out of that courtroom laughing his ass off.
