A police chase has turned into a manhunt for two suspects, and the lockdown of three Lexington County schools.

The chase began with South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers pursuing two suspects in a car. When the suspects got away, troopers called for backup from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

The search then began on foot.

A spokeswoman for Lexington School District one has reported that Carolina Springs Elementary and Middle Schools are both on lockout, along with White Knoll High School.

Though the schools opened on August 31st utilizing a hybrid learning model, meaning some children are learning from home, there are still students and teachers in the schools. A lockout means that no one can leave the building.

According to deputies, the search is centering around Knotts Haven Trail, off Nazareth Road, across from Longs Pond Road. This search area is less than a mile from Carolina Springs Middle School, where police are staging and coordinating search efforts.

K-9 deputies and a SLED helicopter are assisting in the search.

The manhunt is still ongoing, and the lockdown has not been lifted.
