The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has been hospitalized due to a heart condition.

He was fitted with a pacemaker on Sunday morning at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv after being rushed there the night before.

According to doctors, the procedure went well and was released later that day for observation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was admitted into hospital early Sunday morning after suffering from what doctors called “transit heart block”.

After fitting him with a pacemaker, doctors said that the procedure had gone well but he would remain at the hospital for observation.

This news came just hours before a key debate on his controversial judicial reforms which have sparked protests across the country from both citizens and prominent figures in Israeli civil society such as Yossi Cohen, former head of Mossad.

Netanyahu’s proposed bill aims to curtail the Supreme Court’s oversight powers by limiting its ability to strike down decisions it deems “unreasonable”.

While this is supported by his hardline allies within his coalition government, critics are worried that it could open up doors for corruption and arbitrary decision-making by removing these standards set out by Supreme Court justices.

Despite President Biden urging him to reach a broad political consensus on these reforms before passing any legislation, lawmakers will vote on whether or not they should pass through Knesset (Israel’s Parliament).

These reforms could potentially prove crucial to keeping Netanyahu himself out of jail as he faces multiple charges including bribery and fraud.

It remains unclear how much support will remain for him should this bill pass through Knesset although if recent protests are anything to go off of then it looks unlikely that he will retain majority backing going forward regardless of whatever happens with this particular piece of legislation.
