I have to admit, this is a report that completely stunned me.
Donald Trump was recently asked if he thought Lara would get appointed to fill the seat that will be vacated by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) after he gets approved as Secretary of State.
Trump stated that he does not believe that will be the case.
Not Happening
There is a lot to look at here, and I think I understand why Trump feels this way.
When directly asked about Lara getting the nod, he stated, “No, I don’t.
“But I don’t know. Ron’s doing a good job, that’s his choice — nothing to do with me.”
When Hegseth was getting more resistance as the Secretary of Defense, there were rumors flying that Trump and DeSantis discussed DeSantis stepping in.
Now, it looks like Hegseth is going to get through, so any deal that was struck to give Lara the seat is probably dead in the water.
DeSantis is likely looking for his next move, and if Trump has a successful term, Vance will likely be the favorite.
If Trump has a bad term, running in 2028 is career suicide.
This tells me that DeSantis will likely use that Senate seat to keep his political career going.
He will more than likely appoint someone who will agree to keep that seat warm until 2026 when Rubio’s term was slated to end and DeSantis will be termed out as governor.
If he has an ally in that seat who is not interested in running in 2026, DeSantis can run for the seat and head to the Senate for a few years to let things settle, then take his shot again in 2032 or 2036 for the presidency.
Remember, DeSantis is only 46 years old, so he will only be 50, 54, and 58 over the next three elections, so he has plenty of time to get into the White House.
Just to be clear, this is just my thought process, not based on any information or reports. This is just how I see it all playing out over the next decade or so.
