Secretary Mayorkas just found himself in hot water with his liberal buddies.
Next month, Title 42 officially ends.
Mayorkas is now ending a program that was put in place to expedite the processing of migrants at the border.
He is doing so for fear that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) asylum officers will be too overwhelmed by the expected surge.
Just Waiting
There are currently an estimated 40,000 migrants at the border waiting for Title 42 to end.
That number grows almost every day.
On the plans of Mayorkas to deal with that issue, a spokesperson stated, “In light of ongoing border-related planning and to ensure operational readiness ahead of the lifting of the Title 42 public health order, ICE and CBP will temporarily pause new referrals of potential Asylum Merits Interview (AMI) credible fear cases and USCIS will temporarily pause scheduling any new AMIs.
“Referrals are anticipated to continue in the near future.
“In the interim, any noncitizens who have already been scheduled for AMIs with USCIS will continue through that process.”
Mayorkas is putting a new rule in place that came right from the Trump handbook.
The question is whether the rule will actually be followed or if it is just there for show.
The new rule will call for anyone that does not file for asylum in their home country to be immediately expelled, which is pretty much everyone crossing the border these days.
Either way, Mayorkas is in big trouble next month as we all anxiously await to see what happens on May 11 when the rule ends.
