An Eight year-old girl: Mahogany McBride in the Bronx was living in a nightmare, her sixth floor apartment was on fire. It must’ve appeared that help wasn’t going to arrive becuase this little girl made an amazing split second choice. From her balcony the little girl surveyed the ground below, aimed for the grass and took a leap from the building.
From The Leap Of Faith
As the girl jumped, she kicked off of the balcony causing her to clear the pavement some Ninety feeet below and narrowly landed on her feet in a small patch of grass barely a few feet across. Given that the thin compacted soil of New York is only more forgiving by degrees than concrete, the girl’s legs buckled and broke. However, she survived the impact in stable condition thanks to the rapid assistance of her neighbors and 100 firefighters.
According to The Daily News,
“FDNY Deputy Chief Anthony Montera said at the scene Wednesday that the girl avoided severe injuries with her split-second decision to jump away from the pavement below.”
To Neighbors Who Kept The Faith
“She was on the ground crying and screaming,” said one eyewitness from the building. “I came up and there were people all over, people were crying. One man was crying, telling me he tried to catch her but the force of her fall was too much. It’s a miracle that girl is still alive.”
Linda Kemp, the building’s tenant council President told the press “You don’t know how happy I am for the grass, As tragic as it was, I’m happy it wasn’t worse. She’s a feisty little girl. I give her respect. She was a brave, brave little girl.”
Kemp related that the building’s residents pulled together and rushed to the young girl’s aid, “You know how when you see something, you’ve got to do something,” she said. “There were some other residents and bystanders trying to help. I just dug in, motherly instincts took over. We just tried to protect here, keep her still.”
“Thank God their terrace is right in the area where there’s grass,” agreed one neighbor who lives down the sixth floor hallway. “I just hope she … gets better. Just a happy little girl, always seemed very happy.”
This incredibly fearless and quick thinking Eight-year old girl, pulled off a move that Duane ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson couldn’t in “The Other Guys“! She figuratively ‘aimed for the bushes’ and made it!
