Details are just floating in Friday morning about a massive explosion at Havana’s Saratoga Hotel. Not much is known at this time but there are two deaths reported along with 19 injuries.

Explosion across from Capitol

Social media posts indicate that the explosion happened shortly before 11 a.m. and also point out that the hotel is located directly across the street from Cuba’s Capitol Building. Rescuers continue searching for survivors.

Even though the location is politically strategic, Cuban press is suggesting that it was a gas leak because “a gas company was servicing the hotel at the time of the blast.”

Whatever caused the explosion, the blast was massive. At least three floors were blown away along with buses and cars parked outside the hotel. The Saratoga, built in the 1930s is considered historical because of it’s location in the center of Havana and boasts a five-star rating. Complete with 96 rooms, bars and restaurants, the rooftop pool has a panoramic view of the city.

The French Neoclassical design, complete with wrought iron balconies looks great in the iconic Havana Art Deco paint scheme. At least it did before the blast. Dust and debris were sent billowing into the sky.

Ambulances arrived quickly and patients were transported to nearby clinics. Word of the outcomes is only beginning to trickle back. Local news is reporting that a school next door to the hotel had been evacuated after the explosion. Video is circulating of people pulling one unconscious victim from the rubble.
