Investigators are still searching for the bodies of seven people believed to have died when a small plane crashed into a Tennessee lake, including an actor who played Tarzan in a television series in the 1990s.
In a statement released on May 30, Rutherford County Fire Rescue Captain John Ingle said that recovery efforts, which were focused on a half mile-wide debris field on Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna, were still ongoing.
“With dive teams in the water, we are strongly urging civilian boaters to stay away from the public safety boats,” Ingle said.
A news release from county officials on the evening of May 29 identified the victims as Brandon Hannah, Gwen S. Lara, William J. Lara, David L. Martin, Jennifer J. Martin, Jessica Walters and Jonathan Walters, all of Brentwood, Tennessee.
According to reporting by ABC News, “Gwen Shamblin Lara founded the Remnant Fellowship Church in Brentwood in 1999 and wrote a faith-based weight loss book. Her husband of nearly three years, known as Joe Lara, was an actor featured in the TV series ‘Tarzan: The Epic Adventures.'”
The Cessna C501 carrying the victims departed from Smyrna Rutherford County Airport and was headed to Palm Beach International Airport when it crashed on the morning of May 30.
A lead investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board is on site at the crash scene.
Local reporter Brinley Hineman was at the scene of the crash. “I’m at Fate Sanders Marina where officials are expected to soon share updates on yesterday’s deadly plane crash where Gwen Lara and other Remnant Fellowship Church leaders are presumed dead after crashing into Percy Priest Lake,” she tweeted.
