From the very outset, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been adamant that he wanted a quick dismissal of the charges.
On Sunday morning, Graham stunned Trump supporters by admitting the Republican-led Senate does not have the votes to move for immediate dismissal.
Graham stated, “Yeah that’s dead for practical purposes.
“The idea of dismissing the case early on is not going to happen; we don’t have the votes for that.”
Still a Quick Trial
While Republicans may not have the votes to get the charges dismissed right out of the gate, Graham is still very optimistic that when the dust settles, Trump will be acquitted.
Not only that, earlier in the week Graham predicted a bipartisan acquittal, which would just be devastating for Democrats.
The only real question now is if there will or will not be witnesses called.
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been pleading with Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) to call witnesses, but McConnell has not given in on that request yet.
There is also the question that even if witnesses are allowed, if Trump will invoke executive privilege considering the sensitive nature of the most likely witnesses to be called, such as John Bolton, Trump’s former National Security Adviser.
Graham seems to believe this trial will be over before Trump’s scheduled State of the Union at the beginning of February.
There have also been rumors that McConnell is considering doubling the mandatory six-hour session to hold 12-hour sessions, at least through opening arguments, to move the trial along much quicker.
The Hunter Biden Issue
Because the Bidens are at the center of the accusations made against Trump, more than a few Republicans would like to get both Hunter and Joe Biden on the stand.
Graham, however, would like to leave that for its own investigation rather than skim the surface during the impeachment.
It sounds more like Graham is hoping to convene a special investigator to look into this rather than leaving it in the hands of a senate committee.
The circus starts this week, patriots, so dig in, because we are assured of sparks flying as the Democrats make their last pitch to remove Trump from office.
