Just moments ago, the House Sergeant-at-Arms, Paul Irving, led a historical procession to the Senate.
When the House managers arrived, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) read the articles of impeachment, officially opening the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald J. Trump.
Here We Go
This portion of the impeachment is largely ceremonial, but it does signify that things are about to get very testy for our president.
Schiff and company arrived in the Senate, chests out, very proud of themselves for having delivered the articles to the Senate.
The House managers were received by Senate President pro tempore Chuck Grassley (R-IA), then Schiff, who was appointed to be the lead House manager by Speaker Pelosi (D-CA), read the articles to the Senate.
The House managers that will represent the House during the trial are House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA)., House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), Val Demings(D-FL), Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
The Senate still has considerable work to do before the formal trial starts, but we can expect that to begin within the next week or so.
More Challenges for Trump
Amid all this impeachment pomp and circumstance, a report broke earlier today that in independent government watchdog agency concluded the Trump administration broke the law by holding back the Ukraine aid.
The conclusion was that since the Trump administration held the money back due to policy issues, this was a violation of the law.
Democrats have latched onto this already, saying it makes the impeachment case against Trump stronger, but this particular issue was something we all knew about already.
Technically, the administration violated the spirit of the law, but the Trump administration seems to be getting empathy from voters for the fact it was withholding the money to ensure the new Ukraine administration was not as corrupt as the last.
It is being portrayed as due diligence rather than purposefully breaking the law.
Regardless, expect this report to be used against Trump during the impeachment.
The next step will be for McConnell to hash out the trial rules, including if there will be witnesses or not, then the official trial will take place.
Dig in, patriots, because this is about to turn into a very wild ride.
