Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) played an unexpected role in the election of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.
After initially supporting McCarthy, Donalds changed his vote and ended up becoming a focal point of the Speaker election, even getting nominated himself at one point.
As it turns out, Donalds was holding out for some goodies for himself.
The Deal
I have already gone on record saying that I supported the agenda of the resistance.
What I do not support, however, was holding the position hostage for personal gain, which is what Donalds appeared to do here.
Donalds stated, “Early on I gave Kevin the benefit of the doubt.
“But it came pretty quickly clear to me that we were getting nowhere. And so, at that point, it was saying, ‘OK, how long is this going to go?
“‘ What’s this going to play out like?’
“And so it was really about trying to make sure that we can get people to the table in order to construct a framework that everybody in our conference can get behind.”
Donalds managed to get himself a key committee appointment in the process…

As far as I am concerned, anyone that bargained for personal gain has become an immediate member of the swamp.
This was supposed to be about changing the rules, not a shakedown.
Very disappointed in the start to Rep. Donalds’ career.
