Officer Down, Manhunt Underway

A Linn County Sheriff’s deputy was shot several times during an armed robbery at a convenience store. A manhunt is now underway for the suspect.

Linn County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a robbery in progress at the Casey’s General Store at 5110 Highway 13 in Coggon, Iowa. When one deputy entered the store at around 10:30 p.m., the suspect opened fire on the officer, hitting him several times.

“Numerous law enforcement agencies are responding to assist deputies in the Coggon area after a robbery in-progress was reported at the Casey’s Store. Shots were fired and a deputy was wounded. Stay indoors and lock your doors. Report suspicious activity immediately at 9-1-1,” the Linn County Sheriff’s official Twitter page reported soon after the incident.

Help soon arrived, and the deputy was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Officials have not reported the extent of the deputy’s injuries. No other injuries have been reported as of yet.

According to investigators, an active manhunt is currently underway for the suspect who carried out the robbery and shooting. Residents have been advised to lock their doors and stay inside their homes.

Highway 13 has been shut down through Coggon, and detours have been set up.

The suspect fled the area in a van, and was soon spotted by another deputy, who pursued the vehicle until it crashed on North 3rd Street in Coggon. The suspect then fled on foot. Several law enforcement agencies are now assisting in the manhunt for the shooter, who has been described by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office as a black male in his mid-30’s, between 5′ 10″-6′-2″, approximately 200-220 pounds, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

The Linn County Sheriff tweeted an update the morning after the shooting, writing: “News Release: Linn County Deputy struck by multiple rounds during an armed robbery at Casey’s General Store in Coggon. The Deputy was flown by Lifeguard to UIHC with serious injuries. The suspect is still at large.”
