DOJ Sandbags Senators Over Hunter Biden Case

DOJ

The DOJ decided that a powerful pair of senators can’t have the information about Hunter Biden that they asked for. When they didn’t get it, they wrote a letter straight to U.S. attorney David Weiss. In it, Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley asked the prosecutor on the playboy’s case if he thought he “was being properly supported by Main Justice.” The really surprising part is that the Department of Justice answered back for him, as if they read his mail even before Weiss did.

DOJ takes full control

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, ranking member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, teamed up with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who’s ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, to investigate the investigation of Hunter Biden. They’ve been at it for a couple of years now.

It seems that the DOJ is intentionally blocking them from getting the answers they ask for. The U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware was supposed to cough up the goods but never did.

After “repeatedly being stonewalled by DOJ headquarters in Washington D.C.,” the senators wrote a letter in May directly to U.S. attorney David Weiss, “who is handling the Biden criminal case.” In it, they expressed serious concern about “possible conflicts of interest and the existence of recusals within the Justice Department.

They also had a few issues with “the president’s son’s claims of judicial influence in Delaware.” They came right out and hammered “the federal prosecutor on whether he was being properly supported by Main Justice, and inquired about what steps he had taken during his investigation.

Weiss didn’t answer, Merrick Garland did. Acting Assistant Attorney General Peter Hyun signed it, so he will be the one to go under the bus now that it’s blowing up in their face. “DOJ headquarters was clearly alerted to the letter, because it was it, not Weiss, that responded to Grassley and Johnson, denying their requests for information.

The denial was total. The department “will not be able to provide you with any further information regarding Department officials’ employment or specific recusal decisions.” That’s the equivalent of taking the fifth.

Weiss the only exception

As soon as Joe Biden assumed control in January of 2021, he immediately cleaned house, asking “all Senate-confirmed U.S. attorneys appointed by Trump for their resignations.” The DOJ made only one single exception, David Weiss. Even John Durham was asked to step down as the U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut and he did.

He kept the job as Special Prosecutor but that goes away when the case ends and he hits the unemployment line. Meanwhile, Weiss ends up in charge of probing whether or not the allegations Hunter Biden sold access to his dad are true or not.

Hunter admitted that he is under federal investigation “for his taxes shortly after the 2020 election and is reportedly being scrutinized for possible money laundering, as well as possible foreign lobbying violations under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

That’s no big deal he insists. The DOJ is trying real hard to agree. Hunter has lots of help on the inside. For instance, Nicholas McQuaid.

McQuaid is a former federal prosecutor who Joe Biden appointed acting chief of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. At one time, Nick “had been a partner at Latham & Watkins with Hunter Biden defense lawyer Christopher Clark and worked on cases with him right until McQuaid took the job at the Justice Department.” The senators think that smells like a conflict of interest.

When they wrote to Weiss in May, they noted that they asked Merrick Garland about that before and wanted to know what he thought because the DOJ was being sketchy. They won’t say a word to the senators but told the Washington Examiner that McQuaid “is screened and recused from matters in which he has a financial interest or a personal business relationship, including matters involving his former law firm.
