Famed Person Charged With Arson

July 13 was an unlucky day for Caleb Ganzer. He’s now behind bars on a long list of charges including arson. Just before 3 a.m. Manhattan’s celebrity wine waiter appeared on Prince Street Pizza’s surveillance video “lighting outdoor dining structures on fire, then casually walking down the street afterward.” It wasn’t his first intentional fire.

Which wine goes with arson?

According to police reports in the astonishing arson case, back in January, “Ganzer set fire to a dining shed outside Forsythia Restaurant on Stanton Street shortly before midnight.” They also formally charged him with “starting a trash fire at the corner of Broome and Centre Streets in June.”

The 35-year-old firebug became famous enough for Food and Wine Magazine to call him “Sommelier of the Year in 2017.” He is “part owner,” along with some probably well connected businessmen, of “a popular downtown wine bar.”

Each of the suspicious arson fires were sparked “within blocks of Ganzer’s own restaurant.” Along with the pyromania rap, he’s going to have some explaining to do regarding “criminal mischief” and “endangerment.” Especially because the acts were so senseless.

The NY Times reports that the “swish SoHo wine bar he co-owns,” La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, “has a sister site in London.” He must have been high from sniffing corks for stock broker types all day when he decided to set New York on fire literally, like the magazines say he does in his wine bar.

Ganzer’s wine wizard career turned to vinegar the second the New York City Fire Department released a video of “a dark-haired man setting fire to two napkin dispensers on Prince Street Pizza’s dining shelter.”

The NYFD noted they had reason to “link the suspect” to another two lower Manhattan arson fires that “fit the same pattern.” On June 26, “a pile of rubbish was set fire to in the early hours of the morning” that seemed connected too.

Potential to spread

Wine Spectator has no sympathy for the saboteur sommelier. They write that the “Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has charged Ganzer with two counts of arson, two counts of criminal mischief and three counts of reckless endangerment.”

He’s really lucky nobody got hurt. Every fire, whether accidental or intentional “has the potential to spread rapidly, endangering the lives of New Yorkers and New York Fire Department members.”

New York City fire commissioner, Daniel A. Nigro is happy to have the celebrity pyromaniac as a guest in the Manhattan gray bar hotel.

“Thankfully in these incidents there were no injuries and the suspect has been apprehended before another fire could be set.” Wine lovers are disturbed by the arson events. La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels “opened in New York’s Nolita neighbourhood in 2014. The bar boasts a list of over 1,000 wines, with a focus on French drops.”

It turns out that along with arson, Ganzer decided to dabble in politics. He had “registered himself as a candidate for the most recent presidential election.” Probably on the Democrat ticket. “It’s actually surprisingly easy, you just have to fill something out online. I’ve been thinking about this ever since I was in third grade,” Ganzer told the press.

The low key men in expensive suits who really run his restaurant put out an official statement distancing themselves and their money from his bizarre actions. “We as the company are aware of the incident, and Mr. Ganzer is on a leave of absence. If there are any other follow-up questions at this point, we have no further comment.”
